As part of the Southern California Bight 2003 Study of ocean and bay waters between Point Conception and Baja California, Mexico, a series of region wide sampling events are planned for this fall and winter (2003/2004) to answer some questions on water quality and stormwater flows at beaches next to large drainages.
Participating organizations include local health departments, City water/ wastewater agencies, and private and academic researchers.
One aspect of this study is to compare water quality at the shoreline (where routine testing is performed in 4 -12" depth water) to the wave impact zone where most people surf, kayak, body surf, etc.
Are these routine shoreline sample results representative of the water quality where you surf?
Here's your chance to help find out.
The first shoreline/ surf zone water quality comparison study will take place on Wednesday, September 10th and will include sampling during the incoming tide in the morning and outgoing tide in the afternoon.
Sampling locations in San Diego County will include:
South Imperial Beach
San Diego Bay
Cardiff State Beach
Oceanside
This study is looking for volunteers to paddle their boards into the surf zone and collect samples.
Anyone interested in participating should meet at Torrey Pines State Beach parking lot off Carmel Valley Road near the restrooms on Saturday, September 6th at 10:00 AM for a training session.
Free parking on Carmel Valley Road.
Attending the training session is required to participate in the real study on the following Wednesday.
